(WSBT) The speculation is over about just how much property tax bills are going up in St. Joseph County. That's because they're finally arriving in a mailbox near you.

The county says all of the tax bills should have been mailed out and taxpayers should get them by the end of the week.

Even though the county treasurer said the tax bills didn't increase by the 24 percent that was expected, some taxpayers are unhappy with their bills.

One Mishawaka couple saw their tax bill increase by $3,600.

“Last year it was $1,600, this year it's $5,210,” said Doris Thompson, of Mishawaka.

She thought that was too much and went down to her township assessor's office.

“They said they had to redo it again,” she said.

There were exemptions left out of her bill, but even with those exemptions, the Thompsons say that wouldn't be enough.

“$3,000 dollars, that's not going to bring it down that much, I don't think, so I'm going to have to put my house up for sale or do something, but I can't afford paying this much for this house," she said.

Other taxpayers feel her pain.

“Someone needs to see how we can get this thing under control, seems like it's gone haywire,” said Betty Clay of South Bend, while paying her tax bill.

Thompson says if the bill doesn't come down enough, she will appeal.

“I didn't think it was this bad, my mom and dad would complain about it, and everything, but they would roll over if they paid what they have to pay today,” she said.

County officials say glitches in bills are not uncommon, so if you see a problem, make sure you contact your township assessor. Taxpayers who have not appealed their assessment still have about 45 days to do so.

However, if you do appeal, the county says to at least pay last year's tax bill, so you don't get hit with late fees, if your appeal is unsuccessful. Tax bills are due November 13.
