Milestone Reached in Construction of New St. Joseph Regional Medical Center

Crews have only one more steel beam to put up in the construction of the new St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. All week, hospital employees have been able to sign the beam.

(WSBT) If you've been around Douglas and Main in Mishawaka recently, then you may have noticed construction is moving along quickly on the new St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC).

Crews have only one more steel beam to put up.

All this week, hospital employees have been able to sign the beam, and Thursday, the CEO did the same.

Next week, crews will hoist the 40-foot long beam into place, ending a major part of the construction process.

“It is, it's a step,” explained Nancy Hellyer, CEO of SJRMC. “It also ends a period of construction that's dangerous. It ends a safety period where they have taken immense steps to be safe. It's an important time for the construction crew and an important time for us. It means we've hit a major milestone.”

It should take about four months to enclose the building. The project is still expected to be finished in the fall of 2009.
