(WSBT) Police have issued a state of emergency in Nappanee Friday morning. Authorities are telling people to stay home and businesses to remain closed.

Nappanee appears to have been hit the hardest. WSBT crews in that area report trees and power poles across the road in the area of State Road 19 and County Road 7. A gas leak in that area has forced emergency crews to evacuate the area.

A number of services are currently out. Power is out to many residents and water service has been disrupted. A strong line of storms moved through the area late Thursday night, spawning at least one tornado in the Nappanee area.

WSBT's Nora Gathings says buildings were leveled in that area and metal was twisted like paper.

There was also damage in the area southwest of Nappanee near SR 331 and County Road 9B. Garages in that area appear to have been picked up and tossed across State Road 331 with their contents inside.

A Bremen Police officer told WSBT a Bourbon firefighter was trapped under a firetruck in a ditch on Beech Road south of 7th Road in Marshall County.

WSBT Meteorologist Rick Mecklenburg says Nappanee was hit twice. Once at 10:25 p.m with a possible tornado. The second at 11:05 p.m. with high winds.

The National Weather Service says a weather spotter in Kosciusko County reported a possible tornado near Sidney. Emergency management officials in Fulton County say several spotters saw funnel clouds in the southern part of the county.

Officials in Pulaski County say golf ball-sized hail there significantly damaged a car.
