(WSBT) Governor Mitch Daniels has a plan to deal with the property tax issue. Taxpayers across the state are angry about bills that have doubled, even tripled.

News reports out of Indianapolis say the governor will likely propose a decrease in property taxes, and a cap on future increases. The reports say he will also call for an increase in income and sales taxes to make up the difference. Some taxpayers welcome the proposals. Others are much more skeptical.

Jay Johnson’s tax bill more than doubled.

“Other than a gasp and almost a faint, I was amazed, I was appalled,” said Johnson.

The state laid him off soon after Governor Daniels took office, so he's no fan of the governor.

And he says the governor's proposals are coming too late to help taxpayers this year.

“This is one of the first things I think he should have addressed when he first went into office,” said Johnson. “The problem existed, it's not new. We've known property taxes were going to go through the roof.”

Other taxpayers paying their bills at the treasurer's office say they will take any help they can get.

“Everyone's got to pay taxes, it's a part of our life,” said David Fish, who plans to appeal his bill. “Everyone grew up with that thought. But it's very difficult, it's very difficult for the population of St. Joe County.”

Governor Daniels calls his plan fair, far-reaching and lasting.
