(WSBT) Saturday's weather was a good reminder that winter is right around the corner. And if you haven't turned on your heat already, you probably will be soon.

Saturday, representatives from NIPSCO, Indiana Michigan Power, United Way and other agencies gathered at the South Bend Boys and Girls Club to help people with how to manage their winter heating bills.

The goal was to provide the tools you can use to keep those heating costs down.

NIPSCO gave away weatherization kits and programmable thermostats.

"The actual commodity of natural gas has only gone up modestly since last year," says Mike Charbonneau from NIPSCO. "But what we're looking — last year was a very mild winter. People were golfing, as you saw, through January. The only really cold month we had was February. So it was abnormally warm."

Experts say if temperatures return to normal this winter, most of us will see higher heating bills.
