(SBT24/7News) South Bend police on Thursday took a man into custody for court-ordered psychological evaluation after he allegedly threatened to chase high school students off his property with a shotgun, police said.

The man called the South Bend Community School Corporation’s maintenance facility Thursday morning and made the threat, police said.

A school corporation employee told officers the man said he had experienced ongoing problems with Washington High School students walking through his yard and urinating on the grass, and that he didn’t want to have to chase them off his property with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Officers watched the man’s house during the day as a precaution, police said. By Thursday evening, police said, they had secured a court order mandating that the man be taken in for a 72-hour psychological evaluation.

At that point, officers, including SWAT team members, surrounded the man’s house, which is in the 100 block of Bellewood Street near Washington High School, police said.

After talking to a negotiator for about 20 minutes, police said, the 42-year-old man emerged from his home at about 6 p.m. and was taken in for the evaluation.
