(WSBT) A gun dealer is charged with making false statements about the sale of a gun to Scott Barnaby — the man who shot and killed a South Bend police officer.

That gun dealer was arrested Friday on federal charges.

Ronald Wedge, 71, of Bristol is accused of making false statements about the sale of a gun Scott Barnaby allegedly bought from him at a gun show over the weekend in South Bend.

Barnaby Killed Cpl. Nick Polizzotto and wounded Patrolman Michael Norby early Tuesday morning before Barnaby died in the shootout with police.

When selling a gun, the person buying it to must be cleared by the government through a national instant criminal background check. It is that process that has Wedge in trouble.

WSBT News was in federal court when Wedge made his initial appearance Friday. He is accused of making false statements about the sale of the gun Barnaby bought from him at a gun show over the weekend.

Wedge allegedly sold Barnaby the gun before Barnaby was approved, and then allegedly lied on records saying when Barnaby received the gun.

Barnaby was eventually approved to get the gun. The same day, the police officers were shot.

If found guilty, Wedge could face up to 15 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

In court Friday, Wedge said he knew what he did was wrong. The judge then stopped him and advised him to wait until he had a lawyer to make a statement.
