Historic Notre Dame Building Damaged by Storm

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) A historic building on Notre Dame's campus wasn't spared from Tuesday’s storm. The winds toppled trees and even a spire on the Basilica.

Minutes after the tornado sirens sounded in South Bend Tuesday, the storm rolled in, bringing with it strong winds.

“It hit hard, it hit quick, and it was over just as quick,” exclaimed Will Sturgess who watched the storm roll in while at work.

The storm left behind a lot to remember.

“The winds started kicking up by the new apartments by Notre Dame, and we saw a full rotation that kept rising. At that point, I just started yelling for our customers, our employees to get to the bathroom, which is the strongest part of the building,” explained Sturgess.

Trees blocked roads, signs were blown over, and a knocked down utility pole left wires lying along State Road 23 near Ironwood Road.

“It's crazy. We totally didn't think it was this bad. We just felt the winds, it was intense, but nothing like this,” said Notre Dame student Raine Paulson.

On Notre Dame's campus, you couldn't even see the Grotto from the road right in front of it. Trees - some more than 100 years old - were blown over and others snapped in half.

“I've never seen it like this. This is ridiculous,” exclaimed Notre Dame student Alexandra Hanson.

Students gathered in disbelief after a spire on the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was blown to the ground.

They took pictures and pieces of the basilica - pieces of Notre Dame history.

“It’s a really neat thing to have. It's really awful what happened, and I’m sure they'll fix it soon, but it's a really neat thing to have,” said Paulson.

Winds are also being blamed for damaging a small stained glass window at the Basilica.

With graduation just days away, clean-up crews quickly got to work. University police closed campus due to the damage.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.
