(WSBT) Tuesday’s winds caused a lot of damage at Notre Dame. They ripped a 23-foot tall chunk off of the historic Basilica.
The university says it’s not sure how much it will cost to fix, and the timing of this storm couldn't be worse.
Graduation ceremonies are just three days away. Guests will begin arriving in 48 hours, and unfortunately, there's only so much those clean-up crews can do.
“Wow. This is a lot of damage. This is incredible," Notre Dame student David Saucedo said.
The storm that roared through in a matter of minutes Tuesday evening spit out days worth of cleaning up to do.
"We had quite a bit of damage across the campus," Notre Dame’s Dennis Brown said.
The morning after, as an army of workers attacked the debris, students, staff, and visitors toured the Notre Dame campus, some with cameras in hand, capturing the consequences of an incredible wind — so intense, it ripped a spire from the roof of the basilica.
“We don't think it's going to be exorbitant, but at the same time, it's some significant piece of damage to a historic landmark," Brown added.
Across campus, more than 30 trees are down or will have to be taken down, all with days to go before graduation — one of the biggest days of the year.
"It's kind of sad because I’m a senior and my parents are coming up from Texas and this is pretty much all they're going to see is damage and trees," Saucedo said.
“I spoke to our superintendent for landscape services. He hopes to have everything cleaned up by Friday so it's not going to be ideal but at least it will be somewhat better than it is this morning,” Michael Garvey said while touring the damage.
No one was hurt on campus in last night's storm, but campus officials haven't determined how much the damage will cost them.
