Plans for License Branch Meet Opposition

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Plans are underway to renovate the license branch at Town and Country Shopping Center in Mishawaka, and move South Bend's license branch by the end of the year. But not everyone supports those changes.

After a year of computer problems and long lines at the license branch, at least one customer saw a change.

"We didn't have no problems at all," Jean Hill told WSBT News. "It was in and out."

The State says more changes are still in store, with plans to renovate the Mishawaka branch and move South Bend's branch to the far northwest side, near Brick Road and the Bypass.

"Not only will customers like the design and the feel better but we're also expanding the number of terminals," explained BMV Commissioner Ron Stiver. "That's important because the more terminals you have the more quickly you can get customers in and out."

"This is a fast-growing area and I believe they're sort of skating, they believe they're skating to where the puck will be or is coming to be. But I hope they've chosen well," Governor Mitch Daniels told WSBT News.

City leaders say they haven't. It's not the improvements they disagree with — nobody minds shorter lines at the license branch — the problem, they say, is the location.

A number of city leaders — including Mayor Steve Luecke — say it doesn't make sense to move the branch further away from the city, not directly accessible by city buses and right between two truck stops.

In a letter sent Monday to the BMV commissioner, House Speaker Pat Bauer, who represents South Bend, asked the State to reconsider the decision to move, claiming the proposed location is not easily accessible to most residents of South Bend.

"What're they gonna do about everybody that's in the community?" asked Jean Hill. "They just want to move everything out."

A BMV spokesperson told WSBT News they haven't signed a lease yet, and this isn't a done deal.

Mayor Luecke says he wants the branch on Western to stay where it is, or perhaps even move closer to downtown. He'll meet with BMV officials about it next week.
