Meeting Leaves Questions Unanswered, Neighbors Still Mad

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) Weeks after a recycling plant caught fire, neighbors still say they want it rebuilt somewhere else. People who live near VIM Recycling got a chance to be heard Saturday afternoon by Indiana state officials and a representative of the company. And emotions were running high.

Dozens of fire crews responded to that fire last month. One employee was killed and another seriously injured.

The company says it plans to rebuild the plant in the same place, but neighbors say not if they can help it.

People who live near the plant say they've complained about health, dust and safety issues since the plant opened.

"My wife's asthmatic," said one man. "You're drawing this stuff back in. She's a prisoner in her own home."

Neighbors also say they're stuck with the water bill from the three days it took to extinguish the fire as well as the expense of repairing damage to their homes.

"What do I get? 'Sorry about your luck.' I lost, so far, almost $700 because of the fire. Are you going to pay it back?" one man whose home was damaged asked the VIM spokesperson at the meeting. "Nope, because your insurance company says 'Too bad.'"

But one of the hottest issues at Saturday's meeting was the burning fiberglass that landed in nearby yards during the fire.

"VIM does not accept fiberglass," said Tom Holt, a spokesman for the company.

But Holt later said VIM had accepted wood containing small amounts of fiberglass not knowing it violated their permit until the Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a citation.

IDEM has given VIM until September of 2008 to remove it, but neighbors say that's unacceptable.

"You have the control to fix it," said another neighbor. "Please, just do it."

VIM says they're installing state of the art equipment that will remove dust and keep it from neighbors yards. They'll also be reinstalling sprinklers inside the plant. But neighbors say the plant has had years to make those changes. So now, they want it out of their neighborhood.

The only problem is, no one seems to know who has the authority to make that happen.

After receiving few answers, neighbors say they may now seek legal action.
