Airport Runway Closures Leave Passengers Confused

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Some passengers are confused about flights at South Bend Regional Airport Tuesday.

The airport's director says they're grounding most commercial flights from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

But some people say they have tickets to fly out during that time.

Now it looks like Continental Airlines will fly out of South Bend on Tuesday. That's because they have smaller airplanes that need a shorter runway distance. The airport will allow Continental to use a 4,300-foot east-west runway that sits north of the airfield, which will stay open.

Officials learned of the airline's intention Monday after some confusion from a passenger.

Dale Carter said her mom is scheduled to fly out of the airport Tuesday morning, but they grew confused after reports that there would be no commercial flights that day.

“So when I got home, she said, ‘I can’t fly out tomorrow,’” Carter told WSBT News. “And I said ‘Well contact your travel agent,’ and she did. The travel agent called Continental Airlines, who called the airport, the South Bend airport, and they said Continental Airlines was flying tomorrow.”

Airport Director John Schallio said it would be “interesting” to see how Continental handles its passengers Tuesday.

“They may not be able to go out with a full passenger load, and I don’t know how they determine who goes and who stays,” explained Schalliol. “I did have a conversation about 10 minutes ago with Continental, and they are intending to operate their flights. So if I were holding a ticket for one of those Continental flights I would certainly contact them as soon as I could.”

The airport will finish its extension to the north-south runway.
