Camp Eberhart Loses 200 Trees to Severe Weather; 'Family Camp' Canceled

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) Summer is coming to a close and that means a lot of families will be out this weekend trying to enjoy the time that's left. But there won't be any families doing that at Camp Eberhart in Three Rivers, Mich. after some wicked weather hit the area on Wednesday.

It was bad, but it could have been a lot worse.

"We've lost well over 200 trees, we've been without power five of the last seven days,” said Brice Emanuel, Executive Director at Camp Eberhart.

The storms did a little damage to buildings, but thankfully no one was hurt.

"Fortunately the children were safe and we continued program until we were able to evacuate the kids out of the camp," added Emanuel.

This latest round of severe weather wasn't the first.

"Well we got hit last Thursday, we put about four days in and as of last night [Wednesday] another storm came through and did just as much or more damage," said Bob Kolby, Facility Director at the camp.

All that damage forced camp officials to cancel this weekend's Family Camp.

People from as far away as Europe were planning to come to Camp Eberhart for some summer activities, but this weekend the only activities will be clean up.

The camp was booked for the holiday weekend and was expecting 150 - 200 people to stay, but not anymore.

“As of last night [Wednesday] we decided that we had to cancel so it's the first time we've canceled Family Camp in many, many years,” said Kolby.

Camp Eberhart is open year round and hopes to be back up and running by Monday.
