(WSBT) We've seen it in recent headlines: "Elkhart County ATV crash injures 2," "ATV flips, killing 7-year-old boy in southern Indiana," "ATV accident sends teen to hospital."

It's the reality of recreation gone wrong. It could be the result of improper use of the vehicle, lack of attention to your surroundings, or simply a "bump in the road." Whatever the case may be, it's important that riders know how to prevent ATV accidents.

WSBT News is urging you to take the first step toward ATV safety.

According to the ATV Safety Institute, "The rider should always wear a helmet, eye protection and protective clothing. Always avoid paved surfaces. Never ride on public roads. Never carry passengers or engage in stunt riding. Avoid excessive speeds. Riding and alcohol or other drugs don’t mix."

While these safety tips may seem obvious, here are a few tips you may not know:

  • Riders under 16 years of age must be supervised by an adult.

  • It is vital that the engine size of the ATV is compatible with the age of the rider. To see what engine size works best for your rider, visit the ATV Safety Institute Web site by clicking on the link in the Related Content box.

  • Just like cars, ATV models differ from one another. This includes: clutches, starters, transmissions and two-wheel/four-wheel drive. Control locations are also different. You should remember that it is important to get become familiar with the ATV before you can properly operate it.

  • Before you ride, check the condition of your ATV — tires and wheels, controls, lights and switches, chain/drive shaft and chassis.

  • In many states the laws require that you register your ATV as part of the state’s off highway vehicle registration program.

ATVs can be fun and safe provided that the rules are followed and necessary training is obtained.
