(WSBT) The St. Joseph County Council is scheduled to vote on budget cuts Monday night. County leaders have asked departments to cut $1.7 million from the budget in 2008 and 2009.

Budget cuts this year and next means a number of people will lose their jobs and vacant positions will go unfilled.

St. Joseph County departments are expected to lay off 24 employees and leave 12 job vacancies unfilled.

The only employees getting raises will be those mandated by the state. They include the sheriff, deputy prosecutors and public defenders.

Right now St. Joseph County is $3.4 million in the red. To soften the blow of the budget crunch, the County Council decided to spread the budget deficit over two years — $1.7 million in 2008 and $1.7 million in 2009.
