Chloe, an 8-month-old Irish wolfhound the Aberdeen Area Humane Society is helping, is now recovering from surgery.
Chloe underwent a two-and-a-half-hour-long surgery Thursday to correct her front legs. Her legs were bent because of issues with growth plates, a condition that could have either been a birth defect or the result of neglect.
The humane society raised enough money to cover the cost of the surgery, which was about $7,000, said board President Carole Kiesz.
Chloe took her first steps on her fixed legs this morning, Kiesz said. They are bandaged up for the time, and Chloe will be recovering at the veterinary clinic for a week before being reassessed.
"I'm just amazed that she's up," Kiesz said.
The humane society surpassed its fundraising goal for Chloe's surgery. Kiesz said the "Chloe Fund" will remain there and money donated to it will be used to help other dogs with medical issues at the shelter.
"We're going to try to keep that going," she said. "People can put donations in there if they prefer to, and it will always be Chloe's."
There is another dog at the shelter who might need to have an eye removed.
There is also a possibility that Chloe will need more surgery once she is fully grown, but that's an uncertainty, Kiesz said.
A family has already applied to adopt Chloe. Their application will likely be accepted, Kiesz said.
When they will be able to take her home depends on her recovery.
"She has just touched so many hearts," Kiesz said. "It's just amazing."
