A 40-year-old woman died early Saturday after a fire in a Glen Burnie home, the second fire-related fatality in Anne Arundel County of the new year.
County Fire Department Division Chief Keith Swindle said Shari Lee DeStefano was found in the basement of a one-story house in the Marley area and transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where she died of her injuries shortly after midnight.
Nine adults and two children were displaced by the fire and given shelter, Swindle said.
Firefighters arrived at 21 Sumac Road at 10:22 p.m. Friday after neighbors reported the fire at the dwelling, a single-family home that has been divided up into multiple units, he said. It took 46 firefighters 34 minutes to get the fire under control, Swindle said.
The investigation is continuing but the fire is believed to have been accidental and caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, he said. There were no working smoke detectors in the building, according to Swindle.
One person was killed in a mobile home fire in Maryland City Wednesday morning. The person's name has not been released.
