GOSHEN — Many people are stocking up on gifts and candy, getting ready for Easter Sunday. One local chocolate company says the Easter Bunny business is still sweet despite the bitter economy.

“Chocolate and Easter kind of go hand in hand,” said Kare Anderson of Olympia Candy Kitchen in Goshen.

It's crunch time for workers at the Olympia Candy Kitchen, and there's no time to milk the clock making their handmade chocolates. The business is now in the fourth generation.

“With the economy, I mean we've seen some ups and downs, like everybody has,” Anderson said. “This year, Easter did fall earlier last year in the middle of March, so this year with it being later in April, we've see pretty good sales."

He says the sale of Easter candy continues to be brisk, although some customers said they are scaling back a little bit this year because of the economy.

“Every Easter we do come in for just a little bit of candy, a special treat for our children,” said Goshen mom Kelly Vorhis. “We are watching our budget this year. I think I probably spent less this year than I have in the past, but it’s a special tradition in our family.”

“I'm currently unemployed, but Easter is always important to me,” added Goshen resident Tim Welcher. “I've always been a firm believer in going to the local communities and restaurants and still supporting that. Easter is important to my family and they always get a kick out of Olympia Candy.”

“Right now we are watching our budget due to the economy, but we do feel Easter is very, very special to us and try to do a few special things,” said Kathy Greene of Cincinnati, Ohio.

You're still in luck if you haven't picked up your Easter goodies. The Olympia is open Friday and Saturday, but is closed on Sunday.
