PLYMOUTH ― Business leaders in Plymouth are asking people to shop local for the holidays.

It is a campaign they have been working on all year, and they are ramping up for the big holiday shopping season. They are having special events where merchants stay open later.

Economists say shopping locally helps provide jobs, which brings in more business, and eventually gives shoppers more options.

“We improve quality of life by increasing choice, and we have more choice when we support our local businesses,” said Morton Marcus, an economist with the IU Kelley School of Business.

“We're simply trying to ask consumers and businesses and institutions to take a look at doing whatever business they can with local merchants,” said Doug Anspach, director of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

Business leaders say they are even rooting for the big box stores like Wal-Mart, which employs more than 400 people in Plymouth.

Anspach said those stores bring in local shoppers from around the area, giving smaller specialty shops and restaurants a chance to claim some of the business as well.
