Civil unions in Illinois
On Jan. 31, 2011, Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law Senate Bill 1716, legislation allowing civil unions. At the time, Illinois was the sixth state to allow civil unions or their equivalent. The bill went into effect June 1, 2011.
