(CNN) — The world celebrated Earth Day on Tuesday, but the bad economy is making it difficult for some to participate in greener methods. Consumers are backing away from organic products.

The latest survey from the consulting firm WSL Strategic Retail shows less than half of those surveyed believe organic items are good for them or the environment. Two years ago, the survey showed 54 percent of those surveyed felt the same way.

The national director of the Organics Consumer Association says price is probably a factor.

Organic items cost 50-100 percent more than non-organic alternatives. For instance, the Department of Agriculture reports national prices for a gallon of milk is about $3.78. Organic milk runs near $7.00 at some stores.
