Chrysler's Nardelli: High gas prices are a necessary evil

By Beth Boehne

DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler LLC Chairman and CEO Bob Nardelli says the nation needs high gas prices to encourage consumers to buy fuel-efficient vehicles that the federal government has mandated automakers build.

Nardelli spoke out against a proposal, promoted by presidential candidates John McCain and Hillary Clinton, to suspend the 18.4 cents a gallon federal excise tax on gasoline.

Nardelli tells the Detroit Free Press for an online story published Thursday evening that while he empathizes with the pain higher gas prices causes consumers, the nation must have an energy policy that is aligned with the country's larger goals.

He also said offering a federal incentive for consumers who buy fuel-efficient vehicles built in the United States might help boost the sagging U.S. economy.
