LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Kroger supermarket chain says it's voluntarily recalling ground beef linked to an outbreak of illnesses from E. coli bacteria.

Kroger says customers who bought ground beef with sell-by dates of May 31 to June 8 at stores in Michigan and the Columbus and Toledo, Ohio, areas should return it to stores for a refund or replacement. The company says the ground beef in question is no longer being sold.

The Cincinnati-based company's announcement Wednesday came several hours after Michigan health officials said they had confirmed at least 16 cases of E. coli illnesses. Ohio officials say at least 19 people have been sickened.

The Michigan cases have been reported in Eaton, Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Ten of those cases involved hospitalization.
