SOUTH BEND — Out of 600 store closings across the country, Starbucks only plans to close one Michiana-area cafe.

That location is 3600 Portage Ave. in South Bend.

Portage employees believe their freestanding cafe near Meijer will close between Sept. 1 and March 30, but no specific closing date has been announced.

Starbucks on Thursday announced 22 Indiana and 18 Michigan company-operated store closings.

Within the last week, Starbucks released the first 50 locations and said it planned on releasing additional closings each month.

Now the full list means the guessing game is over and other area Starbucks, including the locations inside grocery stores and supercenters, will remain open. Those stores in this area include Martin’s Super Markets, Meijer and Target.

"In the spirit of transparency with our partners, customers and communities, we have provided the full list of stores...," a press release accompanying the list on Starbucks’ Web site stated. "Store partners will receive advance notice and more details from their leadership team once a specific closure date has been confirmed."

Why does this not surprise me. They have another starbucks right up the street at the corner of 933 and clevland road and then there is 1 or 2 in mishawaka because i believe there is one still in the super target, and there is a standalone I think. Why does south bend need all these? Sonic's Drive in Java Chillers are better anyway!

Dear Sue, I can afford it. It is cheaper then a gallon of gas. I pay $2.50 for a large cup. Please don't tell people how to spend their money.

The 600 store list was released. The first 50 were released a week or two ago. The reason they aren't closing is because this is America and is run by the free market, and not communist Russia!

I don't know why they just don't close them all - who can afford it? Can you say "over-priced"?
