The Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana and the Indiana Banking Association are warning of telephone scams in the area.

According to a news release from the Better Business Bureau, a person posing as a representative of the state of Indiana or the Department of Financial Institutions is calling people, claiming to need information to ensure that deposits are insured.

The caller is asking for personal information, including bank account numbers.

The calls are fraudulent.

Other fraudulent calls are automated calls claiming to represent banks, telling people their debit cards have been canceled. The recordings tell people to call a telephone number where they are asked to provide card numbers, expiration dates and PIN numbers.

People should not respond to those calls.

The Better Business Bureau also warns people not to respond to e-mails asking for personal information.
