HOLLISTER, Calif. (AP) — A legal fight is brewing between the city of Hollister and the company that's based its popular clothing line on the same name.

Abercrombie & Fitch, which produces the Hollister Co. surf wear line, wants businesses in the city to stop selling clothes bearing the Hollister name, saying it's trademarked.

But city officials and local merchants say the company can't stop them from promoting civic pride. Some are ignoring warnings by Abercrombie & Fitch lawyers and continuing to sell T-shirts and other items with the name.

Abercrombie & Fitch executives say the Ohio company created its fictional Southern California beach town to support the clothing line, launched in 2000. The actual San Benito County city, incorporated in 1872, is best known for its farming community and biker culture.
