A new co-operative looks to connect local residents hoping to buy food from nearby farms with local producers.

The Purple Porch Co-op expects to be operational by the end of May, just in time for the growing season.

To kick off the new cooperative, potential members and producers are invited to an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Montessori School, 1101 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend.

Potential members can try out the co-op’s online ordering system, meet farmers, tour the distribution center, fill out and turn in membership applications and learn about the co-op and volunteer opportunities.

Purple Porch Co-op producers will post their products for sale on the co-op’s Web site. Customers can shop online for their food, and pick up their purchases weekly at the distribution center at Good Shepherd.
