SOUTH BEND — The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County announced Tuesday that it will open a second thrift store in the former Great Escape store at Indiana 23 and Ironwood Drive.

The goal is to open it by Aug. 1, according to a news release.

The nonprofit agency, which focuses on helping those in need, has had just one thrift store for several years. Recently it has been at 3408 Ardmore Trail, which will remain open, the release states.

On May 21, the St. Vincent board authorized signing of a lease for the Great Escape building.

The second site will help St. Vincent generate more income, Director Charlie Thompson said.

"We have been researching the expansion of our retail operations for several years," Thompson said. "Recently, we were made aware of the Greenwood Plaza location. John Becker (owner) has offered us very agreeable terms that will allow us to try a new venture to better serve the community."
