Goshen Police report check scammers hoping to cash in

Complaints from residents prompted Goshen Police to issue a check scam warning Thursday.

Letters and checks from Alliance Financial Services Inc. have been received by residents, indicating they’ve won $125,000 and the first check which the company sends will be for $4,795.

“The letter indicates the winner is to call the company for verification and then they are to cash the check and pay the taxes of $2,975 by Western Union or Moneygram,” Assistant Goshen Police Chief Mike McCloughen said, via a news release.

The checks are written on Western Bank of St. Paul, MN, but, McCloughen said, an investigation found that while the bank is legitimate, the checks are bogus.

  • If residents received these letters and checks — do not cash the checks. Western Bank representative Mary Schacht wants to see the letters and checks. Fax copies to her at (651) 290-3168 or call her at (651) 290-8100.

    McCloughen did not indicate how many residents received the letters and bogus checks or if any area residents lost money in the scam.
