Ind. gets up to $6.1M for new appliance rebates

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana will receive up to $6.1 million in federal stimulus funds to offer rebates to consumers who buy new energy-efficient appliances including furnaces, air conditioners, refrigerators and water heaters.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced nearly $300 million in grants to states Tuesday. The program is intended to allow homes to use energy more efficiently while stimulating the economy and creating jobs.

The program covers appliances qualified under the federal Energy Star program.

States will get 10 percent of the money once they submit applications. They'll get the rest once the Energy Department approves their plans for distributing rebates and recycling old appliances. The agency expects to distribute most of the money by November.
