Cash for Clunkers for appliances

This is a follow-up to a Good Question we answered on Monday about the Energy Star Appliance Rebate Program.

It's a similar concept to the Cash for Clunkers car program, except this will be for appliances.

We told you on Monday that all 50 states must submit separate plans to the U.S. Energy Department by October 15 in order to be part of the Energy Star program. That means the programs will be run differently in each state, which means the times people can take advantage may vary.

And we're finding out that will very likely be the case in our area.

Michigan told WSBT News they don't expect to have the program ― where you, the consumer, can get a rebate on a new, energy efficient appliance ― available until early next year.

After waiting a day to hear back, Indiana has now told us they expect to have the program up and running by early November. That is much sooner then Michigan, which means Indiana stores and appliance makers may get a little economic stimulus help sooner than Michigan.

It is not exactly clear how much the rebates will be. Once again, that number could vary by state. An Indiana official told us it could be between $50 and $200.
