FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana utility regulators have ordered Northern Indiana Public Service Co. to refund $4.1 million to its natural gas customers.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission ruled that the company charged more than it should have to cover the cost of gas that escaped from its pipelines between August 2007 and July 2008.

NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer says the company is working to decide whether the refund will be paid based on gas volume used or divided equally among all its customers. An equal split would amount to about $5.75 for its 712,000 natural gas customers across the northern third of the state.
