(WSBT) Both men running for mayor of Mishawaka faced off Sunday on jobs, the economy, and how to better use the city's resources.

It was one in a series of debates between incumbent Republican Mayor Jeff Rea and Democratic challenger Mike Hayes.

A recent poll by WSBT and the South Bend Tribune found the number one issue with voters in this election is jobs and the economy.

Both candidates were asked what they would to to strengthen the local economy and create more jobs.

"We've worked really close with companies on not only attracting, but retention I think has to be an important piece too," said Mayor Jeff Rea. "Retaining those jobs that we have here. The real economic developments of the future are going to be those jobs that are at those factories that are here and continue to grow," Rea said.

"We need to recruit some jobs that pay more of a living wage," challenger Mike Hayes said. "We're doing a great job with retail services in Mishawaka, but we also need some living wage jobs," Hayes added.

The debate aired Sunday afternoon on public television station WNIT.
