(WSBT) Voters will head to the polls on November 6. Incumbent Allan Kauffman is seeking another term as Goshen’s mayor.

The Democrat says he has had a chance to talk with a lot of voters about the issues that should be of concern at City Hall next year.

"Well I think that what voters are concerned with are issues like immigration, the effects of that on the community, property taxes,” Kauffman told WSBT News. “But when we go door to door, we are finding that most people understand that those issues are kind of controlled at the federal level and the state level, and that we have to deal with the effects of it locally.”

He says the city's recent emphasis on neighborhood improvements is working and should continue.

“We know that our neighborhood preservation ordinance has had great effects in the community — we have fixed up a lot of houses, landlord's houses that need to be fixed up, they are getting fixed up,” he explained.

The Republican candidate for mayor of Goshen is Mark Huser, currently a member of the Goshen Police Department.

“The major issues are the illegal immigration, roads and what we are going to do with our traffic congestion, our tax dollars, how they are being spent. Those are the three biggest ones,” Huser said. “Other things are city ordinances — that would be a problem that I didn't bring up earlier that citizens are really upset about."

He says there are some good programs in the works that need to continue.

“They are doing some great things. The downtown is looking better than it has probably since my entire life,” Huser said. “We need to continue to build on those."

Both candidates say they're also concerned about having enough police officers on the streets.
