INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon has endorsed Jim Schellinger in the Democratic primary race for governor.

Schellinger and former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson are seeking the Democratic nomination, with the winner likely to face Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels in the general election.

"I have great confidence that Jim Schellinger will serve as a wonderful governor," the wife of the late Democratic Gov. Frank O'Bannon said Wednesday.

O'Bannon previously had endorsed state Sen. Richard Young, who dropped out of the race in October.

Schellinger said he was honored by the endorsement, and that he would try to live up to Gov. O'Bannon's legacy of building consensus.

"We deserve a governor that listens to our ideas," Schellinger said. "I will be that governor for the people of Indiana."

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, U.S. Rep. Julia Carson, former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg and the United Auto Workers have also endorsed Schellinger, president of an Indianapolis architecture firm and a longtime Democratic activist.

Long Thompson also has several endorsements, including the Bloomington mayor, "Hoosiers" writer and producer Angelo Pizzo and United Steelworkers District 7.

Both candidates have endorsements from various state senators and representatives.
