Delegate selection process to go forward, despite party threats

(AP) — Michigan has been told not to bother sending its 156 Democratic National Convention delegates to Denver, where even the hotel rooms have been taken away.

On the Republican side, the party faithful are supposed to pick just 30 delegates to attend the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, half the normal number.

Both parties lost delegates as punishment for moving up Michigan's presidential primary to Jan. 15, breaking national party rules.

Despite that, leaders of both state parties are sure the delegates will be restored before the conventions. So they're moving ahead with their delegate selections.

According to state GOP officials, 45 of the GOP delegates will be selected based on which candidates do best in each of the state's 15 congressional districts, with the winner in each district getting all three available delegates. A dozen delegates will be divided among the candidates based on how they do statewide.

There will be three Republican unpledged delegates: state GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis and Republican National Committee members Chuck Yob and Holly Hughes.

On the Democratic side, 83 delegates will be apportioned by congressional district based on how much of the vote each presidential candidate gets in each of the 15 districts. Forty-five delegates will be apportioned based on how each candidate does in statewide voting.

The party also has 28 unpledged delegates, including state Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Dingell, congressional members, Democratic National Committee members and others.

Meetings to select the GOP and Democratic national convention delegates will be held in the months after the election.
