One millage proposal in Michigan passes, two others fail

By Jim Pinkerton

There were a couple of local issues on Tuesday's ballot in Michigan. A millage request in Berrien County passed, but two issues in Cass County failed.

The proposal to renew a millage to fund the River Valley School District's operating budget passed. The increase only affects property taxes for businesses, commercial properties, vacation and second homes. The vote was 985 Yes, 439 No.

If the proposal had failed, the school district would have lost $63,000. The operating budget covers items like electric, busing and teachers' salaries.

In Cass County, a proposal to raise taxes an extra 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value failed. That money would have been used for improvements to primary county roads and major streets in Dowagiac, Cassopolis, Edwardsburg, Marcellus and Vandalia. The vote was 2,169 Yes, 5,315 No.

A similar increase to fund improvements to township roads and bridges along with local streets in those cities also failed. The vote was 2,212 Yes, 5,276 No.

The county estimates each millage would have generated more than $820,000.

The comment on the road comm workers may have been true in the past about keeping our roads in good shape in all kinds of circumstances. But I know longer see that. The past two or three years our roads are in terrible shape.I don,t blame all of this on managment, butIm sure it has a great deal to do with it.The last couple of years our roads are not regulely plowed or have had sand put down on them, because of that my wife had lost control of a four wheel truck because of nothing but Ice .

The drivers at the Cass Co Road Commission deserve a clap on the back. These guys do a great job of clearing our roads even in the most treacherous weather. I wish I had a job that would let me have a company car to drive all over the county to do non work errands like the manager and supervisors are able to do. Maybe if more attention was paid to where these guys are driving to and from the road commission would not be in the financial troubles that it is in.
