MISHAWAKA — Gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson outlined a strategy Tuesday for improving Indiana’s economy by restructuring taxes, transforming health care policy and changing education policy with a re-emphasis on vocational training.

The Democrat spoke at a news conference at the United Steel Workers of America in Mishawaka.

She said Indiana suffers from incomes and high school graduation rates that both are too low. The policies of Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican seeking re-election, haven’t work and need to be changed, Long Thompson said.

She proposed changing the state’s tax structure to one that is fair, equitable and transparent for businesses and families. She said she would offer incentives to businesses to encourage them to provide health insurance plans for workers, improve technology and increase productivity.

Perhaps health care costs would be reduced, Long Thompson suggested, if small companies and individuals were able to pool together to buy insurance.

Expressing what people want to hear is one thing. Coming up with a solid, workable plan is another, especially when such a plan has to go through a Congress worried more about votes and who is with what political party than what is best for the residents of the state. Until I see a concrete plan for change, I'm sticking with Gov. Daniels. Certainly not a fan of his, but at least he has concrete plans for change, especially with reducing local government costs and waste. I guess we'll see.

think she'll get rid of all state taxes and have the state guard defend the state when the residents stop paying federal taxes? I think not! all she will do is continue the dog and pony show while AMERICA collapses. we need a townhall meeting for the michiana area to give solutions to our problems.
