SOUTH BEND — The road to the White House could come through Michiana. Democratic Party officials have been in talks with the campaigns for both Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama about a possible visit to South Bend ahead of Indiana's primary on May 6.

Senator Hillary Clinton's victory in Ohio and Texas on Tuesday raised the stakes in the race for Indiana's delegates.

"I got home and I thought this changes the dynamics quickly. This is going to put us in a spot of importance on the map," said Troy Warner, a local coordinator for Obama's campaign.

Warner says the campaign called that night asking for lists of volunteers and potential sites for a campaign office.

Party officials say the candidates could visit on March 24, which is Dyngus Day and Solidarity Day. Obama may visit as soon as next weekend.

"I think right now they're trying to figure out timewise what works the best," said Butch Morgan, chairman of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party.

Robert Kennedy visited South Bend on Dyngus Day in 1968, perhaps the last primary campaign in which Indiana mattered this much.

Clinton supporter and former South Bend Common Council member Charlotte Pfeiffer says it's little wonder why both candidates would be interested in coming here.

"Northern Indiana has always been a Democratic stronghold, ever since I can remember," Pfeiffer said. "And that's really exciting to see us play a prominent role."

Morgan said he expects to know by next week whether the candidates will indeed visit South Bend, and where that visit would be.

To all of Michiana...For years I have described myself as a Democrat, and now I'm not so quick as to give myself a title. That having been said, I don't understand how any Democrat can be so clueless as to vote for Sen. Obama. While intelligent, the senator speaks so vaguely that he appeals to those who are not willing to look deeper at the issues. Hillary Clinton should be the obvious choice. She bypasses all of Obama's ideals and provides explanations for how to deal with Bush's mess.

as a 21yr old independent who will be voting for the 1st time, i must stress the immense amount of importance i feel in finally having a candidate [i.e. obama] who's reaching out to the youth. while i could've voted in 2004, i never felt fully invested in either candidate. i know i can safely say, young americans are finally understanding that as the future of this nation, we too have a huge part to play in this election. we too matter!!! this is truly democracy at its best.

Rhonda, do yourself a favor and turn of 960 AM for a while. There are three sides to every story. Look into the flag/pledge story and seek the truth. Do not let right wing talk radio divide us.

Great! I plan to visit both of them. Time for a strong intelligent White House. I wish both would run on the same ticket. America could hold its head up in pride, and not in humiliation. Educate yourselves, do what's right and good for America this time!

Who cares if they come to South Bend!I could NEVER vote for someone who won't pledge allegiance to the flag of my country. If he has no respect for the symbol of our nation, how can he have respect for our nation? And his wife can "finally be proud to be an American"?Come on, give me a break. It took BOTH parties to get us in the situation we are in now financially, globally, etc. But, it's an election year so everything gets blamed on the party that's in office.Same things were said in Bill's last

In response to "no libs allowed" I believe that both candidates have plans to lower taxes for the middle class and cancel Bush's upper class tax cuts to make up the difference. And, with the Democratic congress likely to stay in place after 2008, such tax cuts would probably pass. Family values are the responsibility of the FAMILY, just as the name suggests. Blame cannot possibly be placed on the Democrats for loss of those. However, with that said, I do agree with your point about job loss.

Trebor my friend, outsourcing to China will not stop if Barak or Hillary are elected. They will not stop Nafta either. All you will get with them is higher taxes, less freedom, and even more jobs going to China after they try to take corporate profits. The middle class will pay. Family values will continue to decline after more liberal judges are appointed. More little babies murdured, more gay marriage, etc.

If these two want to see what farming our jobs out to China does to America, Michiana is "THE PLACE" to visit. Want a better job?, see where it's made before you buy. Can't find it made in America?, buy it used at a garage sale or off Ebay. Send e-mails to American companies, tell them you will not buy their "outsourced" products!!
