Niezgodski asks South Bend school board, "What on Earth ... were you thinking?"

EDITOR'S NOTE: State Rep. David Niezgodksi, a South Bend Democrat, who represents the district including Washington High School, wrote this open letter to South Bend school board members, expressing his disapproval of the decision to not allow presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to speak at Washington High School. The bold face type was Niezgodski's, and in the letter received by The South Bend Tribune.

South Bend Community School Corporation
Attn: Sheila Bergeron/President

Ms. Bergeron,

What on Earth were you and whichever board members along with you thinking, when you chose to deny the opportunity for young adults within our community the opportunity to meet a former First Lady, current United States Senator and candidate for the President of the United States? Equally upsetting, current Senators and Presidential Candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, have been denied, prior to even having sought the opportunity. Numerous young adults throughout our nation, will for the very first time play a significant role in helping to elect the next President of the United States. It has been forty years since Indiana has had any opportunity to directly influence the outcome of the next person to be seated in the White House.

The energy being displayed by young adults ready to cast their votes for the very first time is truly remarkable. Your opinion; that if one person is allowed to interact in a High School environment would open the flood gates is grossly mistaken. Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain numerous times by rights have chosen a High School environment for their campaigns and have been widely accepted. When I was 13 years old, and the watergate hearings were taking place, we spent many hours watching the hearings during school hours. We had the opportunity to take part in a moment of our history, that future students only would read in history books not yet printed.

You, and those supporting you, having stripped children from the West Side of South Bend of this same opportunity, goes beyond any apparent rationalisation. I am deeply offended by your immensely short-sighted decision. Your further justification that a few members of our community would mix with the Washington High School student body is sorely lacking. Provide for me a time when student/parent interaction has not been wholly encouraged by school systems across this nation.

Your appalling error in judgement goes beyond reason.
I would very much appreciate knowing which members stood for this decision and those that were of sound mind.

Our entire South Bend Community has suffered due to your decision.
I am sure the Mishawaka Community School system is most grateful for your kind gesture towards them.
I will await your response.

Best regards,

David L. Niezgodski
State Representative HD7

As a SBCSC student, I understand what everyone is saying, and why everyone is so upset. Indeed, denying Sen. Clinton a chance to come to WHS humiliating. I think, however, that everyone is much too offended by the entire situation. Mishawka is not at all far from South Bend, and SBCSC students still had the opportunity to see Hillary speak. I think that everyone should remember that and keep in mind that SBCSC had preexisting policies on the issue, even if they are irrational.

The WHS students that signed the petition to ask Mr. Zimmerman why he wouldn't allow their school to be a part of history-in-the-making should all attend the next school board meeting to get their answer in person.

Zimmerman needs to WAKE UP and smell the roses. I do believe now, that he is AFRAID of the school board and he will DO what ever THEY want him to do. Wheres Joan Raymond when we NEED her. What a Joke! South Bend is a BIG laughing stock right about now.

I bet if you required all the students who were present at MHS for the speech to write a brief essay of what she said and what it meant to them. I think you would be very surpised. Most would not have a clue! Only a few might get it right. This is a nice event and it is great to allow these type of things in our area. But it is not a school function. The students that wanted to attend were allowed and too the rest it would have just been a distraction! Good Call by South Bend!

I don't understand why, if Mr Zimmerman and the School Board turned down the request by Mrs Clinton and her campaign to visit WHS, why does George McCullough have the right to allow WHS students to attend the function at MHS and the absence was excused. Seems to me that McCullough works for the SBCSC and should obey their wishes if he agrees with them or not. I feel he was way out of line to excuse absences for anyone. Is he not accountable to them?

Shame on you SB Schoolboard and Zimmerman! I am SO glad my kids aren't in your corporation. We moved from South Bend just because we wanted better for them. This is another fine example of the stupidity and closed mindedness over there! I went to Adams 20 years ago, and, looking back on it, many of the teachers I had were not the best educators, to say the least! What an embarassment for South Bend this has been. I hope the WHS students enjoyed seeing Mrs. Clinton in Mishawaka today!

Thank you Mr. Niezgodski for your support with WHS. It's nice to see you do care. First and formost because you have a daughter at WHS and want her to experience a moment in history. By the way PAT, that backdrop of a child and one that the news spoke to was my daughter. She will be going to college for law enforcement, so this would have been a great opportunity for her and her classmates at WHS. I'm very proud to see her and all the other students express themselves. They need to heard too.

Anonymous it wasn't for the kids. Only seniors were invited, not the entire school, if it was a school event all the students would have been included and it would have been something for Washington to sponsor. Principal is spelled principal not as principle. Believe me I know!

For those of you who think that this is some kind of political ploy to indoctinate our childeren, get real and put your narrow mindedness away for awhile. This town and a great deal of our country is so this party vs that party it is sickening. How about thinking like an American first and then your party. I was asked recently what party I was for, my response...American..

Louise, this was for the students, believe me, I know, my senior son was just one of the kids that got ripped off! Washingtons principle is excusing absenses today so that the kids can go to Mish (the school system that cares about their kids)hopefully they won't be turned away-again!

Hail Mr Niezgodski and Mr Sniadecki! To the closed minded people out there this is not so much about Hillary Clinton. Its about the whole process its the fact that this politician was not local and not from the state this was a national figure that wanted to come to SOUTH BEND WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL. Watching this political process on the national news gets old but when they want to come to YOUR school this was huge! Now we can watch Mishawaka on the national news. Good for you Mishawaka!

Friday, Mar 28 at 9:37 AM Anonymous wrote ...

Hey, guy with memory, if you aren't up to speed with the latest news, it's not that Hillary or her staff were worried about coming to WHS because of the guns found there. The reason for her not coming was that the school board rejected the offer! You should be more informed, because the two students found with guns were implants from other school districts, probably yours! Sorry for dampening your whinefest!

Friday, Mar 28 at 8:37 AM Louise wrote ...

David L. Niezgodski, what were you thinking? This wasn't a program set up for the students, it was for a few students and the public, public meaning people from all over the area including Illinois and Michigan. That type of forum doesn't belong in a school. South Bend has several places to hold such an event. School is not the place. If it were only students she were wanting to speak to it would have been justified for the whining that has taken place, but it wasn't. Get over it.

I have lived on the west side for 11 years. There is violence and crimes in every part of the US. Why strip away the chance for the youth community to engage in political affairs. So what, a couple of students were caught with guns at the school. It doesn't mean that the school is so corrupt that our president nominee shouldn't have the chance to speak to our young adults and instill in their still developing minds that education is a first priority. The board members must have small minds.

You take away an opportunity that would have been very educational for these young adults, but frown on the fact their intrests in school is lacking! Give them a chance to experience something great. Maybe sbcsc is ashamed to let the gov see how they have let down this awesome school and amazing kids! HOPE HILARY SEES THIS.

Does Mr Niezgodski really think that a student serving as a backdrop for a partisan political event has equivalent educational value as his following the Watergate hearings during the 70's. Let's not go overboard about the educational value of listening to a political stump speech. Hopefully the Washington students will lead fulfilling enough lives that failing to serve as a prop for a partisan political event will not leave then feeling empty inside.

Well as a member of the west side community I am not surprised at all by this decision. Had it been Clay or Adams they would have been all over it and welcomed them with open arms. And you all wonder why the kids on this side of town turn to drugs and gangs, because any experience that may benefit or inspire them is denied by the people who are suppose to be looking out for them. As a member of the South Bend community I am ashamed and insulted by this decision!!!

Someone should be fired, resign, be removed from decision making- what have you. In fact it should have happened this past winter when all the adults who work for the city got a "snow day" the day of a blizzard, and these "decision" makers decided the kids should have school. SURE! Adults stay home safe and kids are supposed to zip off to school.

With South Bend being such a Democrat town, I wonder if the outcry over denying the students such an "experience" would be the same if it was John McCain being denied? I wonder if I'd be hearing about denying a Senator and War Hero. Frankly, I doubt it! I also believe having students hearing only ONE SIDE is called indoctrination, not education. As for Niezgodski, if anyone has paid attention to some of the bills that he's proposed...now that is called short-sighted, to use his wording!

As the wife of a HS History Teacher I know the struggle he faces everyday to get his students involved and interested. What a learning opportunity this would have been. What a disgrace to our City.

What a stupid thing Sheila Bergeron and her supporters have done! No matter what political view you have, you could not use your power to stop such a life time event for our young adults. Thursday, Mar 27 at 3:50 PM Jessica wrote ...

I agree with the decision of the school board. The school shouldn't be asked to bend over backwards for a political speaker when they do not allow it for anyone else. The students have lost enough time in class this year. Also, the school board states that only the voting students would be allowed to attend, how is that educational for the rest of the students in the class? I know that it wouldn't be very educational for me even if I did attend. It would be more of a distraction.

I would like to know if the school board in Florida where President Bush was reading to the class on Sept. 11, 2001, ever considered it disruption to the school day or a moment in history those young students would ever forget.
