Some of South Bend's heavy hitters are throwing their support behind a candidate for governor.

Jim Schellinger received endorsements from Mayor Steve Luecke and former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan Wednesday.

Schellinger credits South Bend for helping him form his values, which he plans to use in this campaign.

“It's always great to be home," he said. "I've lived in Indianapolis now for 24 years as well as South Bend and no matter how far away I am, South Bend is always home."

Schellinger's opponent in the Democratic primary is now reaching more voters.

Jill Long Thompson began running ads on local television Tuesday.

Thompson said at a news conference Tuesday she would work to place a cap on taxes that are collected on fuel.

What's with all the Luecke bashing? The guy has been mayor for ~13 years and won his last election (which was supposed to be his most serious competition to this point) in a 2-1 landslide (http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071107/NEWS07/71106107). You can't argue with the facts - the people of South Bend love this guy. Don't let a few bitter people with internet access let you think otherwise.

In one of the comments it stated to do some research on him. My, how people can be fooled. Take a look at South Bend, you cannot even drive down the street without something bad happening! Talk about family values? This one is not fooled!

Just because you do not like the politics of these two men doesn't mean you won't like the politics of Mr Schellinger. Please research each candidate so you can make your own informed decision.

I am disappointed to see so many intelligent people make a choice on who they are going to vote for solely based on who endorsed them. I encourage everyone to research Jim and the woman (her name escapes me) who are running against Mitch Daniels. I believe Schellinger has great plans for Indiana. He is not a politician by profession. He is a man who has worked hard to get where he is today. I would gladly support Mr Schellinger in his race for Govenor.

Jim Schellinger should be exteremly proud that he has the support of two great men. I am from Indianapolis, but I was a strong supporter of Joe Kernan when he ran against Mitch Daniels.
