SOUTH BEND — Wednesday night, the gym at South Bend’s Washington High School didn't belong to the Panthers, it belonged to Sen. Barack Obama.

He was in South Bend on the first stop of the campaign’s “Road for Change” bus tour. South Bend Mayor Stephen Luecke introduced Obama with an endorsement that thrilled the crowd.

“I support Barack Obama for president because he connects our minds and our hearts,” Mayor Luecke said. “No longer do we have to choose.”

Obama talked about the need for change in Washington to help revive the economy, make health care more affordable and end the war in Iraq.

“If we can spend billions of dollars a month in Iraq, we can spend some of that money right here at home — putting people back to work, getting our economy in order,” Obama said.

Those who heard Obama speak said they felt an energy they haven't felt in years.

“We've been here since about 7 o'clock,” said Kathy Waters, an Obama supporter. “People were packed in, but they were kind to each other. It was charged.”

“The energy is incomparable,” said Rev. Andre McGhee, pastor of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. "I was really fascinated by it. He gave me hope. I believe if we give him an opportunity to serve the country, he will do a fine job."

From South Bend, the senator will head to Gary and Lafayette. The campaign has said it will spend a lot of time in Indiana before the May 6 primary.

In addition to that, no one seems to care that government subsidies on pelle grants and aid to universities has increased college tuition costs 150% over 20 years. Who would like that fixed? I can drive an economical car but good luck funding 4 years of my son's college tuition. To me, it sounds like the government dumbing down of America so big brother has to step in and "rescue" us.

"Is Obama stupid" hit the nail on the head. Big oil is recording record pfrofits from futures speculators, inflation, and a weak dollar. Europeans have been paying what we pay for years. Nobody mentions food costs on here. The leftist move for ethanol has led to the conversion of soy bean and wheat fields to corn fields leading to increased prices. You may want to know that it takes more energy to produce ethanol based fuel than what it puts out. It is not cleaner, cheaper, or more efficient.

Will SOMEONE sign their name to their criticisms? I will sign my name to this comment: the Barack Obama event was a very uplifting, positive and inspiring event. Unlike many of the comments that have been made on WSBT.COM over the past few days, the event was free of racism, hate, fear and suspicion. Sen. Obama spoke openly and in detail about the issues affecting our community and our country. If you do not see the need for change after the past eight years there is nothing I can say to you.

Regarding those Obama anti oil Co. commercials. The reason for high oil prices is mainly the weak dollar and also the ‘gambling’ market speculators that drive up the price not JUST big Oil (which, yes, could give 'some' back). Punishing Big Oil will do nothing to solve the real problem – the weak dollar. So that commercial tells me Obama is either stupid, ignorant or just telling you what u want to hear and has no understanding about the real world. He looks like another ignorant politician.

You Obama supporters don't get it. You're getting less than 50% of the democrats in Indiana, where the republicans have over 50% of the total population. Now you've alienated most the Clinton supporters, so you won't even get all the democrats. Who is winning here?

Obama is an organizer alright. An organizer of the same hatred we saw in the 60s. If that is what he want us to revisit then that definitely isn’t the sort of “change” that I want my children to be burdened with. Blacks and whites have come along way in the past 40 years. We live next door to one another. We share rides to and from school. We play sports and attend family functions together. Our children date each other and get married . What more can be done to unite us. Why go to hate again?!

So why this irrational attraction to Obama? He promises change, but what kind of change? He promises a change in direction for America, but what if this is a direction that most Americans don't want to take--such as amnesty and driving licenses of illegal aliens. Withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq when now al Qaeda is on the run. The transfer of hardened Muslim terrorists from Guantanamo to the U.S. mainland where they would be given the same rights as American citizens.
