SOUTH BEND — Gas prices hit an all time high in South Bend Tuesday: $3.75 per gallon. Just one year ago, prices were almost a dollar cheaper.

That has everyone talking about gas prices — whether it's how to pay for it or what they think lawmakers should do to lower the costs.

Last week Congressman Joe Donnelly announced his gas savings plan. Tuesday, one of his Republican challengers outlined how he would help ease the burden at the pump.

Luke Puckett gave away 250 gallons of gas in 30 minutes at the Marathon station on East Ironwood. He said he was giving away free gas to draw more attention to the oil problem and the need for change.

Most people would do just about anything for five free gallons of gas right now, so waiting in a line that stretched around the building wasn't a big deal.

Puckett pumped gas for 50 drivers and talked to them about his plan to lower prices at the pump. He says liberal Democrats who are financially backed by environmental lobbyists are to blame.

His plan would be dramatically different from the plan Donnelly outlined last weekend. Donnelly is requesting 20 million barrels of oil to be taken from the reserve, which he says would lower the price of gas by 25 cents now.

But Puckett is thinking about the future and wants to drill for oil in Alaska and California.

“We know we have a long-term energy problem and we plan to deal with it on a long-term basis, but we want to take immediate action so that our families can get a break in the pocket right now,” Donnelly said last week.

“That's a Band-Aid," Puckett said Tuesday. "The solution is very simple: Go to Congress, allow them to begin the discussion of tapping into ANWR and other domestic resources."

WSBT News spoke to people as they waited for their free gas. They say they will be thinking about gas prices when they go to vote next week. They also said they believe President Bush is to blame for the high gas prices.

With prices this high, you may be wondering: Am I really getting what I pay for at the pump? WSBT News decided to test pumps across the area to find out. WSBT's Troy Kehoe has the special investigative report — Gallon of Gas — Thursday night at 11 p.m.

Oil has peaked and will be lower a year from now that it is today - unless we attack Iran. But any relief will be short-lived. The 6.5 billion people on this earth are requiring more and more oil every day, and now many of them can afford to compete with us on price in order to get it. Also, thanks to agri-biz, oil and food are now more or less interchangable. The only way to deal with this crisis is to consume less and adopt a sustainable lifestyle. He who hesitates is lost.

(from Houston TX) What a bunch of lame excuses I'm reading here. The reason for high gas prices is that the 'gas pie' is being sliced into smaller pieces. How's that? Consider that India has recently begun manufacturing an $2500.00 auto. The populations in both India and China that previously rode bikes and scooters-- that can afford the new cars-- are joining us at the 'world's gas pumps'. Go on-- blame whoever you want. How nearsighted. Mark my words $5/gal. gas by 2009. jw1

Bill I can tell your a liberal! If we drilled in Alaska we would not this problem right now. Shoot if we just open a few new rifenerys, which we haven't done in 30 years, this wouldn't be happening. People like Dustin are making gas prices high! Thank liberals! You guys are no room to complain because its your guys fault!

I agree with Bill. If we drilled in Alaska we wouldn't have this problem. The pipelines actually help out the animals because they use it for warmth during the winter. Or we would even build more oil refineries, that would significantly help. We haven't opened a new refinery in over 25 years! Thanks liberals! Liberals have no room to complain because its there fault!

For the last 25 years such orginzations as the Siara Club,Green Piece has blocked any attempted to drill for oil they are to blame for our higher prices because of there idea that it would damage the eccology where the drilling would be done they have made it a political view of both political parties in the house and senate. It is not the all the white house that should be blamed but any politition from the local to the national scean not all but a big share of them, plus all of us are to blame.

People should get educated when it comes to oil. It takes about 5 yrs to get new oil resources into gas. Congress approved tapping new wells in Alaska in the 90's but good old Bill Clinton vetoed the bill. We would be getting that oil by now. We also need more refining capacity. The last refinery built was 30 years ago, again, thank the democrats for that. Biofuels, and ethanol are good to supplement oil, but not the answer. We need oil!! Also understand, the oil complanies do not price oil.

The damage is done! It doesn't make an difference how much they reduce the price on a gallon of gas because they will raise it up again down the road for some other unverifiable reason. We have demonstrated that we will pay $3.75 so you can bet that is what we'd better get used to paying. IF you want it to stop there you must take a serious comittment to conserving fuel on your own and get others to do so also. Not buying gas on a Tuesday won't get it done. Using public transportation might!

The price for oil dropped $3.00 a barrel today. Why the increse at the pump? Oh wait I forgot price gouging, political payoffs, and PROFITS.

It seems to me that it would be very profitable for the oil companies to be on the forefront of ne technology because everything would have to be new or retro fitted which would = $$$$$. And consdiering their windfall profits, they do love money. I like the oil companies always explained the reason for the high prices was supply & demand. Well, now people have cut down, so there's not as much demand, but prices are still skyrocketting. What's their lame excuse now?

Doesn't this amount to bribing people w/gasoline for their votes? Oh,yeah & about opening domestic areas for drilling, I've heard that it would take about a decade before we'd even get product out of those places. I think that those t10 years could be used more wisely looking for alt. energy sources. Unfortunately, the repubs & their oil company buddies are determined to suck every last drop of oil out of the earth before they even think of other sources.
