PLYMOUTH — When the stranger stopped in Monday evening at Opie’s Deli, 114 N. Michigan St., it wasn’t just a carry-out order she wanted.

Jim Vinall, restaurant owner, confirmed Tuesday it was an advance person with U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. She wanted to know if the restaurant might be available for a visit by the Illinois Democrat, accompanied by Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, sometime before the May 6 primary.

Vinall said he was excited about the opportunity, calling it "nice for Plymouth."

But when he hadn’t had a confirmation call from the woman Tuesday, he said he telephoned her.

That’s when he heard the bad news. Vinall said the campaign advance worker said a scheduling conflict had arisen with the governor.

"So, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen," Vinall said, admitting his disappointment.

A call to the Obama campaign could not immediately confirm information Vinall received Tuesday.

"I tried to keep it quiet because I didn’t want people to hear about it and then be disappointed, but I guess the word got out," the entrepreneur said.

"I would do the same for a Republican," he said.

"It’s not about the party, but it is about the people ... and it would have been nice for Plymouth."
