Indiana primary polls open with Hums Elementary site glitch

By WSBT News1

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY (WSBT/AP) — The polls are open in Indiana, where an expected record turnout and a surge in first-time voters are expected in a close Democratic primary race between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the state's 72 delegates.

No widespread problems have been reported across the state.

However, SBT24/7News did receive word of some problems at Hums Elementary School because of staffing problems.

Pam Brunette of the St. Joseph County voter registration office said an inspector failed to report to Hums by 6 a.m. with the list books of voter names for the precinct.

Shortly before 7 a.m., another staffer was sent to the location and voters should have no further problems, she said.

Sen. John McCain already has clinched enough delegates to win the Republican nomination. Also in Indiana, Democrats Jim Schellinger and Jill Long Thompson face off in a tight race for the nomination against incumbent Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels in November.

Only five of Indiana's nine U.S. House members face challengers. The toughest races could be in the 7th District, where new Rep. Andre Carson faces seven Democratic challengers in his effort to retain the seat he won in a March special election, and in the 5th District, where Rep. Dan Burton faces possibly the strongest opponent of his 25-year career.

You would think with all the money collected from the lottery and the toll road as well as property taxes we could do a little better.

I wish INdiana would come out of the dark ages and into the 21st century. The polls should be open from 7Am to 8pm. Also there is no reason not to sell alcholol on these days. That law was passed when candidates would buy a vote with a bottle of beer. We also should move up our primary to Super Tuesday, so maybe again we would have a say in who wins.

Looked like strong turnout for Harris districts 6&11 at Granger Missionary Church this morning around 7:00am. Its great that Indiana's primary vote means something this year (at least on the Democratic side).

Hums had the same problem last November--if it's the same Democrat worker who didn't show up, whoever reappointed them should be fired! We lost our Councilperson because people were turned away from Hums ("staffing problems") and couldn't come back.
