Young voters cast their first ballots in Indiana primary

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — Lance Wu's first voting experience didn't happen quite like he planned. Wu temporarily broke a voting machine when he tried to slide in his ballot.

"I never imagined that happening, and it just happened," he told WSBT.

18-year-old Andrew Elliott said he was a little nervous when he first arrived at his polling place, the Harris Township Fire Department on SR 23 and Fir Rd.

First time voter Stephen White said he thought he did enough homework by reading Barack Obama's book and listening to debates between the candidates. But there was one thing he forgot to check out.

"I didn't realize that the county surveyor and the county recorder would be on [the ballot]," said White. "So I kind of had to pick and choose with that."

St. Joseph County Clerk Rita Glen told WSBT the county registered more young voters than ever this year. All the first time voters we talked to say they're excited to have such a big voice in this primary.

Annsa Huang said she's been following the Democratic primaries a lot in other states.

"Just following what the candidates have saying, so I'm pretty well versed on what the candidates have to offer," she said.

Stephen White said he looks at the candidates' character.

Lance Wu told WSBT he feels like voting is a responsibility, even if he accidentally jammed a ballot machine!
