Former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson’s declaration of victory in the Indiana’s Democratic primary for governor might be a little premature, her opponent’s campaign staff said Wednesday morning.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting this morning, Long Thompson leads Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger by 7,147 votes. Percentage-wise, the vote is split 50-50.

That’s still too close to call, Schellinger campaign manager Tim Jeffers said in a statement.

"There are many precincts still uncounted, provisional ballots to count and sort through, and a re-canvass process that will likely show shifts in county vote totals," Jeffers said.

Wednesday morning, Schellinger was getting briefings at home from his campaign staff, said Jennifer Wagner, the campaign’s communications director.

"There’s no earthly way Jill Long Thompson should be declaring victory right now," Wagner said. "We’re trying to get the complete picture so we can know what it is we’re dealing with here, so we can know what the next steps are."

Those next steps include making sure provisional ballots are counted – that must happen within the next 10 days – and possibly re-canvassing the vote, or making sure each ballot was properly counted.

But Long Thompson’s campaign says the race is over, and that numerous media outlets have called the race for her.

"We’re in general election mode," said Jeff Harris, communications director for the Long Thompson campaign. "Jill Long Thompson is the Democratic nominee of our party, and we’re moving forward."

Long Thompson declared victory and began soliciting donations for a run against Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels in the fall.

She is expected to hold a news conference with party leaders Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis.

Daniels will win re-election because no one challenge record. he's balanced the budget, kept it balance (property taxes not his doing, that was the courts), he has brought jobs to the state and not just low-paying jobs, but jobs that pay well. We are the only state that's doing well economically in the rust belt. Try to beat that JLT.

Hey John pull your head out of the backside of your body and NEVER equate a loser like Daniels to a man such as Dr. Otis Bowen. To even be stupid enough to say that you'd have to have been in a coma to not see the unparalleled damage not only to the state but the moral of the people who have called it home all thier livws. I think Jim Schellinger could have been a good govenor but he shot himself in the foot with his soft stand on abortion. I told you Jim; have could have been a Moses!

This is the first election in my whole voting life (and I have been voting for 40 years) - that I feel I don't have anybody worth voting FOR in the election. I have plenty of candidates to vote AGAINST. It seems like it is a lose-lose situation for both the gov and pres races.

congratulations to jill! at last we have a candidate of quality and class. we really need smart women for these political jobs, from prez on down. men are too proud, aggressive and know-it-all to be in positions of power. smart women can run rings around the best of men, stretch a dollar 'till it hurts and make peace without first having to beat their brains out. power to the ladies! go jill! go hillary!

While I agree that we should unite the party and defeat that idiot Mitch in the fall, I truly despise Jill and I think enough Indiana voters do too and she would lose in November, whilst Jim would win. Recount away!

MM what are you talking about "suffer" Mitch has done more for this state the any governor since Otis Bowen.

Operation Chaos has hit the governors race also. Please DO NOT recount the votes. Mitch will ditch the witch in November!!!

Doesn't matter what the Demos do my Man Mitch will win in Nov either way. He has balanced our budget and we are the only state doing will in the so called Rust Belt. People need to wake up and see what we really have and quit complaining about it. Lower taxes I like and I like not being one of the highest in the nation on unemployment or foreclosures.

Lets unite and ditch Mitch before he causes us to suffer any more. Jill, we need a change!!!

I don't understand why they don't see her as the winner. 7,000 more votes sounds like a clear victory to me. So what if they recount. She might lead then by 7,050 votes. Waste of time to redo things here...

Sounds like sour grapes on Jim's part. Unite the party and aim at Mitch.
