Obama campaign to open office in South Bend on SaturdayBy ED RONCO, Tribune Staff WriterSOUTH BEND — Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is opening an office here. The office will be inside St. Joseph County Democratic Party headquarters at 135 S. Lafayette Blvd. It’s part of a series of offices opening across the state as Obama, D-Ill., prepares to do political battle with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for the presidency. The office opening is expected to take place Saturday morning. Offices in Bloomington, Evansville, Fishers, Fort Wayne and Muncie are to open the same day. The very fact a Democrat’s campaign is spending time in Indiana shows the state is in play, said Owen "Butch" Morgan, chairman of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party. "We haven’t had anything like this in 40 years," he said. "It’s unheard of. They’re not just campaigning — they’re investing." The last time Indiana’s electoral college votes went for a Democrat was in 1964, when President Lyndon Johnson won the state. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
