Obama remains mum on VP choice

ELKHART — Sen. Barack Obama campaigned in Elkhart Wednesday, accompanied by Sen. Evan Bayh. This was Obama's 42nd campaign stop in Indiana, and his second trip to Elkhart.

Bayh, who was once in the race for president, is now in the running to be Obama’s vice president.

Their joint campaign stop in Elkhart Wednesday fueled buzz across the country that the announcement would happen right here, the Democratic ticket would be filled on this Hoosier stage.

But it wasn't. And afterward, Obama wouldn't say when it will.

"I have said that I will not answer any questions about the vice president selection process until I actually introduce the vice president. So I'm not going to make any comments on that," he told the media in Elkhart. "I can say that Evan Bayh is a valued colleague and a good friend and I think can be critical in helping us win in Indiana by appearances like this today."

Critical in Indiana, where the presidential election hasn't been contested like this in more than 40 years.

CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley says Bayh could be the one.

"Midwest, moderate, big name in Indiana — which certainly will have some pull," she told WSBT News.

She says they've spent a lot of time together, too. But so have a list of others — including some more experienced.

"Look. There are a lot of people out there. I would not be surprised if it were Bayh. But I wouldn't be surprised if it were Tim Kaine in Virginia or Joe Biden in Delaware," Crowley said. "I think the people who know may be talking but they're not saying anything."

Until they do, everyone else will wait ... including Sen. Bayh himself.

Some experts say Obama won't announce his pick for vice president until next week at the earliest.
