ELKHART COUNTY — Local reaction to Obama's vice presidential pick has been generally positive. The general consensus: that Senator Joe Biden will help in areas where Obama may be lacking.

As he went door to door campaigning, Chuck Stouder had a new candidate to talk about.

"I'm very confident that Mr. Biden, if he disagrees or has a different slant on things that he'll very strongly express his opinion to Mr. Obama and I think it'll be great," he said.

A local political expert says Joe Biden's differences with Obama during the primary battle won't be an issue for the two now.

"I think it's important for Obama to have that strength on the ticket," said Elizabeth Bennion of Indiana University South Bend.

The Republicans have already launched their attacks, saying the choice proves Obama doesn't have enough experience to be commander and chief on his own. But Bennion says other VP choices would have had issues, too.

"Somebody like Evan Bayh would have been exciting for Indiana, but he also campaigned very hard for Clinton. So I'm sure there are similar comments he made on tape in support of the Clinton candidacy," she said.

Former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan was a Clinton supporter, but he says Obama made a wise choice with Biden.

"He is a guy that is very warm, is very genuine, someone who speaks his mind and I think Senator Obama realized he would be a great partner for him. I think they will be a good team," Kernan said.

Bennion says it is interesting that Obama chose the senator from Delaware. She says choosing Bayh or Virginia Governor Tim Kaine would have given him help in carrying a traditionally Republican state.

In response to"9:16 /You are so wrong" who wrote about having "another RICH man in office",what's wrong with being rich? You speak of this as if you have a problem with rich people. I know that its a popular theme to portray the wealthy as evil.Gee I hardly think that michael moore, rosie o'donnell and oprah winfrey are starving. I would rather support Big Oil,than BIG OPRAH. Also interesting to me,is that alot of people with your outlook on THE RICH,line up when the lotto has a big payoff.

Obama Binladin is running for president! And, to the morons who like to say McCain wasn't born in the USA, he was born to pure Americans on a military base- which is US SOIL while occupied. Idiot. OsamaObama on the other hand won't produce a birth certificate, was registered muslim in Indonesia, and refuses to pledge his allegiance to THIS country. Makes anyone with a brain wonder just what country he wants to give his socialist loyalties to. Are there really that many idiots in America?

I can't believe these comments I am reading. You guys aren't thinking right at all. Why would we want another RICH man in office that has no signs of reality!?! Remember we are not in bad shape NO one has lost their jobs..etc. Please wake up before its too late. Rethink your thoughts!

You are not being disloyal by voting for Obama/Biden. You WILL BE disloyal to Hillary and the Democratic party if you don't vote for the party with the values that she supports. Come on people. We need to change the priorities in this country. I understand the disappointment if you were a Hillary supporter, but don't throw away your opportunity to give this country what we need; a focus on the middle-class, affordable healthcare; alternative energy policy; a womans right to choose, etc.

Obama isn't even a real American, anti christ blah blah blah. The truth is John Mccain wasn't even born in this country, he was born in Panama. Keep spouting your idiocity and lies and so called Christian values. If you want more of the same as we have gotten from Bush along with free viagra and no birth control, then vote for the cheating sob who lives off of his pill popping wifes money and doesn't even know how many houses he has. Just blame the gays.

Chastain: And democrats aren't as equally repugnant when they say: you should listen to Clinton and vote for Obama. Dude (or honey), if people listened to the candiates (most don't) we'd be in a lot worse shape. Don't cry when you suddenly find that you're paying more in taxes to pay for all the social programs Obama wants to implement.
